About the business and the brief

Drinkkollen is a Swedish cocktail database built to make it easier for everyday people to mix at home. Instead of demanding advanced ingredients or bar experience, the platform lets users start from what's actually in the liquor cabinet - and builds suggestions from there. The brief from the founders was clear: create a digital tool that combines inspiration with concrete usefulness, and that can grow as the recipe base and user volume expand. Hive Creatives took full ownership - from conceptual UX, information architecture and visual identity to web development, search functionality and an editorial framework for ongoing content production.

Challenge

The biggest challenge was to make the search experience the product itself. On most recipe sites the search bar is an afterthought - a filter at the top that assumes the user already knows what they're looking for. For Drinkkollen we needed to flip the logic: start from the user's reality (what's at home, what mood, what flavour profile) and serve a relevant recipe without friction. Technically that meant building a structured recipe database where every ingredient, flavour tag and expression is tagged consistently, while the UX had to be simple enough to work equally well for curious beginners and enthusiasts. Add requirements for fast load times, a mobile-first experience, SEO for competitive drink keywords and a visual tone that feels inspiring without being cluttered - and the complexity becomes clear.

Solution

We built a powerful yet stripped-back search and filter function on top of a structured recipe base where every drink is tagged with ingredients, flavour profiles, glass, occasion and difficulty. The user can start with anything - an ingredient, a feeling, an occasion - and the platform serves relevant recipes instantly. The visual design is deliberately clean and image-driven: the drink is the hero, the ingredient list is scannable and the steps are clear even on mobile. Technically the site is built for performance and scalability, with an information architecture that handles continued growth of recipes, categories and editorial content. SEO is baked in from the start: clean URL structure, semantic markup, fast load times and content written for both Google and humans. The result is a platform where searching isn't a barrier - it's the experience itself.
