About the business and the brief
GBG Cementdesign is a Gothenburg-based craft brand focused on hand-cast cement products for the home, interiors and public spaces. The range is product-driven but the brand matters just as much - customers don't just buy a tabletop or a lamp, they buy an aesthetic and a craft. The brief from GBG Cementdesign was to create a website that elevates both the products and the brand: a place where the materiality comes through digitally, where the range can grow without the site losing focus, and where the visitor is guided from inspiration to concrete enquiry without friction. Hive Creatives owned strategy, web design, development, brand anchoring and technical SEO.
Challenge
Communicating materiality digitally is hard. A cement surface lives from its irregularities, its nuances and its weight - qualities that easily flatten out on a screen. At the same time the site needed to work as an active sales tool, not just a digital portfolio. GBG Cementdesign therefore needed a website that both does visual justice to the products and drives concrete enquiries and quote conversations. Add requirements for a scalable product structure (the range keeps growing), local SEO in Gothenburg, fast load times with large image areas and a visual identity that feels as premium digitally as it does in the workshop - and the difficulty becomes clear.
Solution
We built a visually tactile website where the image areas are large, the typography is calm and the palette lets the material take centre stage. The product structure is prepared for continued growth: new categories, collections and collaborations can be added without the information architecture losing focus. Technically we worked with optimised images, smart loading and a CMS structure that makes it easy for the team to update the range themselves. The conversion flow is built into every product surface - from inspiring hero to clear quote request - and on-page SEO is optimised for local keywords in Gothenburg as well as commercial design keywords nationally. The brand work runs through the entire experience: tone of voice, imagery and microcopy are deliberately kept in the same expression as the craft behind the products.Communicating materiality digitally is hard.
